Getting started

What Customei is, what it needs from your store, and what happens on day one.

Can I import artwork I already made in Photoshop?

Yes, and it stays accurate. Upload a layered PSD and Customei rebuilds it as a template: the layer tree and names carry over, every layer lands at its exact pixel coordinates at the document's native size, and text layers stay editable with their font, size, tracking and leading. Missing fonts are reported rather than silently substituted, so you can upload the licensed file and re-import.

Does Customei work on every Shopify plan?

Yes, from Basic to Plus. On non-Plus stores we use hidden fee variants to add personalization pricing; on Plus we switch to a Cart Transform Shopify Function. The transition is automatic the day you upgrade.

Is there a free trial?

Every plan (Maker, Studio, Atelier) ships with a 14-day trial. No credit card required. You can cancel from the Shopify admin in a single click, and nothing is charged until day fifteen.

What's the deal with star maps, string art and crosswords?

They are dedicated layer renderers. Star maps draw the exact night sky for any date and lat/long via d3-celestial. String art turns a customer-uploaded photo into thread paths on a circular board. Crosswords run as a Lambda service that renders print-ready 3000x3000 puzzles from a word list, with four theme and grid presets. Interactive Mapbox maps, word clouds and word searches round out the set.

All five generators
Can customers upload their own photos?

Yes. Customei supports customer uploads with automatic moderation and an optional manual review queue. Files are stored on Cloudflare R2 with signed URLs your fulfilment partner can read.

What about print exports and fulfilment?

Our print pipeline runs on Lambda workers that render layered files at 300dpi, preserving the original color spaces and fonts. We deliver ready-to-print files to your fulfilment partner via S3, direct API, signed URL or webhook, and delivery state is recorded per file.

How fulfilment works
Where do customer uploads live?

In Cloudflare R2, reached through signed URLs. Full-resolution originals go in a separate private bucket, and the backend refuses to boot without one, so an original is never served from a public bucket. The design record is stored apart from the rendered print file, so a file can be re-rendered or removed on its own.

What we do with that data

Pricing and billing

How the per-item fee works, what counts as an item, and what caps your bill.

How does the usage fee work?

On top of the base subscription you pay a small fee for each personalized item you sell. Quantity does not multiply it: three of the same engraved mug on one order line is one item, while three mugs each personalized differently is three. The fee is tiered by volume — once you pass a threshold inside a billing cycle, every further item is charged at the lower rate, automatically.

Plans are chosen mainly on what you can build (templates, uploads and integrations), not on the per-item fee.

What counts as a personalized item?

Each personalized order line counts once, however many units it carries. A design that prints more than one sheet counts once per sheet, since each sheet is a separate print file.

An item is only counted once its artwork has rendered, so a render that fails costs you nothing. Regular, non-personalized products in the same order are never charged.

Which plan should I start on?

If you sell straightforward variations of a product, such as sizes or engraving text, and one artwork layout covers it, Maker is enough: option sets are unlimited there and you get one design template.

Move to Studio the moment an option needs to change the price, or you need a catalogue of different artwork, product mockups, your own fonts or a second store. Atelier is for production output (every print format, CMYK, 600 DPI) and outside integrations.

Is there a cap on what I can be billed?

Yes, on the usage side. Each subscription carries a capped amount for personalization fees, derived from your plan's own rate ladder and never set below $8,000 per cycle. Shopify refuses any usage charge past that cap, so a sudden spike in orders cannot produce a surprise bill.

The base subscription is separate and always the plan price you signed up on.

What happens when my free trial ends?

Every plan starts with a free trial, so there are no charges while it runs. When the trial ends, the base subscription begins automatically on your Shopify invoice.

Cancel any time during the trial and you won't be charged.

Can I switch plans later?

Yes. Upgrade or downgrade any time from the billing page in the app. Shopify handles proration automatically on your next bill.

How am I billed?

All charges go through Shopify Billing and show up on your regular Shopify invoice, with no separate payment method needed.

Fulfilment and print files

Getting a correct file to whoever makes the product, whether that is a partner or your own press.

Do I have to use a fulfilment partner you have integrated with?

No. Customei has no preferred supplier and takes no cut of production. If your partner can read a file from a bucket, an API call, a signed link or a webhook, they are supported today.

How fulfilment works
What does my printer actually receive?

A print-ready file at 300dpi with bleed, safe area and any cut path already applied, named with the order number, line item and panel — plus the option values, so they can verify without opening the design.

How fulfilment works
Can I check a file before it is produced?

Yes. Proofing can be set to auto-approve, to require review on specific conditions (an upload, a long inscription, a high-value order), or to require review on everything.

How fulfilment works
What if a file is wrong?

Re-render it from the order. The design record is stored separately from the rendered file, so fixing a font or a print area and re-rendering does not require the customer to reorder.

How fulfilment works
Where are customer uploads stored?

On Cloudflare R2, reached through signed URLs. Full-resolution originals live in a separate private bucket, which the backend requires at boot — so an original is never served from a public one.

Building templates

The editor, the layer types and what a template can be made to do.

Do I have to warp every mockup by hand?

No. A flat mockup needs no mesh at all — leave the handles at the corners and it behaves like a normal rectangle. You only reach for the mesh on curved surfaces: drinkware, phone cases, caps, cushions, anything with a seam.

Warp-mesh mockups
Does the warp slow the storefront down?

The mesh is a shader transform, not an image round-trip. Warping costs the same as drawing the un-warped layer, which is why the preview keeps up with typing even on mid-range Android.

Warp-mesh mockups
Can a customer add their own layers?

Only through the fields you expose. Merchants build the layer stack; customers fill it in. That is deliberate — it keeps every order inside a layout you have already checked against the print area.

Every layer type
Do conditional rules need Liquid or JavaScript?

No. Rules are configured in the admin and evaluated by the storefront runtime. Conditional visibility is available on Studio and Atelier.

Conditional option sets
Will it work with my theme?

Any Online Store 2.0 theme supports app blocks, which covers every theme Shopify has shipped since 2021 and every current paid theme. For older vintage themes we install with a snippet instead — write to us and we will look at your theme.

One-block install
What if the PSD uses a font I have not uploaded?

The import summary lists it as missing and the layer keeps its metrics. Upload the licensed font to the brand library and re-import that layer — we never substitute a lookalike behind your back.

Where Customei runs today, and what is only planned.

Do personalization fees break discount codes?

No — that is the reason for the fee-variant design. Fees are real line items on real products, so Shopify's own discount, tax and abandoned-cart logic applies to them like anything else in the cart.

Shopify
What happens to my products if I uninstall?

Fee variants are removed and the block stops rendering. Your products, orders and order artwork stay exactly where they are.

Shopify
We are mid-migration to Plus. Do we have to reconfigure?

No. The switch from fee variants to Cart Transform is automatic and your option sets, templates and print pipeline are untouched.

Product types

The awkward specifics of printing on a particular kind of thing.

How do I handle forty device models without forty templates?

The device is a field, not a template. One template carries the artwork; the device field selects the print dimensions, the cut-out mask and the wrap width. Adding next year's model is one row of configuration.

Phone cases
Can customers upload their own photo onto a shirt?

Yes, with a minimum resolution gate so a 400px avatar cannot be printed at A3. Uploads run through automatic moderation with an optional manual review queue.

Apparel
What happens if a name is too long for the wrap?

The field carries a character limit per line, with a live counter, so the customer sees the constraint while typing. Above the limit the item cannot be added to cart — the print worker never receives an unprintable order.

Running the business

Questions that come up when personalization stops being a side line.

I already use another personalization app. Is switching worth the rebuild?

Start with one product rather than the catalogue: rebuild your bestseller as a Customei template, put it live behind the theme block, and judge the switch on that one product before you move the long tail.

Print-on-demand sellers
Can we self-host?

Above roughly twenty thousand personalized items a month we open a custom plan on top of Atelier, and optional self-hosting is part of that conversation.
