How does the sliding per-item fee work?
On any paid plan we apply four brackets proportionally to your personalized-item volume. Your first 100 items each cost $1.00. Items 101 through 1,000 each cost $0.50. 1,001 through 10,000 each cost $0.25. Every item after 10,000 costs $0.10. You never pay the higher bracket for items that fall in a cheaper one, and the brackets are identical across Maker, Studio, and Atelier. Free is exempt from the sliding fee entirely.
What exactly counts as a personalized item?
We charge per Customei item sold, not per order. One personalized item equals one unique personalized file generated. So if a single order contains five different personalized products, that’s five fees. If an order contains one personalized product with quantity five, that’s only one fee — the same file is reused. Line items that aren’t modified by a Customei option set, generator, or template don’t count at all.
Do transaction fees apply to order quantity?
Not exactly. Fees are based on unique personalized items, not raw quantity. If a customer buys five copies of the same personalized product with the same personalization, you pay for one item — Customei generates a single file. If they buy five copies of the same product but each one has a different personalization, you pay for five items, because each one needs its own personalized file.
So why are there four plans if the per-item fee is the same?
The three paid plans differ in features, not usage pricing. Maker is the entry point (50 products, brand library, onboarding). Studio unlocks the AI Product Lab, conditional visibility, 300dpi exports, custom fonts, and priority support. Atelier adds the Shopify Plus Cart Transform engine, a public API, and a dedicated success engineer. Every paid plan rides the same sliding per-item fee. Free sits outside that model — no base fee, no usage fee, feature-limited instead.
Is the Free plan really free?
Yes. Actually free, forever. Zero base fee and zero usage fee — no matter how many personalized items flow through Customei on the Free plan, we charge you nothing. You get one customizable product, one design template, all ten field types, and all four specialty generators. No credit card, no trial countdown, no forced upgrade. The trade-off is volume-neutral: you cap out on product/template count, not on items.
Is there a cap on how much I can be billed?
Yes. Total monthly billing is capped at $10,000 (base plus usage combined). If you hit the cap we stop charging for the month and a human from our team reaches out to agree on a custom arrangement before the next cycle.
Can I change plans mid-month?
Yes. Upgrades take effect immediately and we prorate the base fee. Downgrades take effect at the start of your next billing cycle. The sliding per-item fee keeps running at its own rhythm and is billed at the end of the month for the items that actually flowed through Customei.
Do you offer annual billing or a discount?
Pay the base plan annually and we take two months off — effectively a sixteen-percent discount on the base fee. The sliding per-item fees are always billed monthly at the same rates.
Is there a free trial?
Every plan includes a 14-day free trial. No credit card needed. You can install, build, and publish — nothing charges until day fifteen, and cancelling before then is one click in the Shopify admin.
What about high-volume and enterprise?
If you are regularly running more than 20,000 personalized items a month, we open a custom agreement on top of Atelier with volume-based per-item pricing, a dedicated success engineer, and optional self-hosting. Write to hello@customei.app.
